How it works
The tip is the bill multiplied by the percentage; the total is split evenly. Some people tip on the amount before tax — if so, enter the pre-tax bill.
Customs differ widely. In the United States 15–20% is usual at restaurants; in much of Europe service is included and rounding up is common; in Japan tipping is generally not expected.
Common questions
How do I calculate a 15% tip quickly?
Take 10% by moving the decimal point one place, then add half of that. On 60, 10% is 6, half is 3, so the tip is 9.
Should I tip on the total with tax?
Etiquette guides usually suggest tipping on the pre-tax amount, but many people use the total for simplicity.
