How it works

Every conversion goes through an exact base unit — metres, kilograms, litres, square metres, metres per second, seconds or bytes — using the official definitions, such as 1 inch = 2.54 cm and 1 pound = 0.45359237 kg.

Temperature

  • °F = °C × 9/5 + 32
  • °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9
  • K = °C + 273.15

US and imperial volumes

US and British gallons and pints are different sizes: a US gallon is 3.785 litres and an imperial gallon 4.546 litres. Recipes from the United States use US cups (236.6 ml).

Kilobytes and kibibytes

Storage makers use powers of 1,000 (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes), while many operating systems count in powers of 1,024 (1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes). That is why a 1 TB drive shows as about 931 GB.
